Stay-at-home girlfriend used to have other name

Inside the rise of the ‘stay-athome girlfriend’ trend, which is sparking outrage — and envy, May 27

I was amused reading the rather naive and shallow article written about the young woman who saw her role as a live-athome girlfriend as one she justified as legitimate. She describes her routine as looking after her boyfriend’s needs while keeping herself attractively healthy for his benefit — and ultimately hers too.

Here’s a news flash: This role is one invented centuries ago by successful moneyed males who could afford to have such kept women in their households.

This young woman does not have children to look after, so she might be able to keep those good looks alive for a few years yet. Her boyfriend is able to afford to keep her if his present income remains intact — or grows.

If she loses her appearance, the relationship crumbles, her lack of a real job affects any opportunities of a future career, or the hole in her resumé becomes a massive chasm, she could redefine her present situation in a more professional sounding title … Courtesan! Marion Bartlett, Singhampton
