Toronto on worst roads list, of course

THEA GRIBILAS

The results are in for CAA’s Worst Roads and, unsurprising to many, Toronto streets make up a large part of the list.

The annual campaign compiled the top 10 worst roads in the province, with Hamilton’s Barton Street East topping the list for the second year in a row.

Toronto’s Eglinton Avenue West, Finch Avenue West, Steeles Avenue East and Lakeshore Boulevard East made the Top 10 this year.

“The 2023 CAA Worst Roads campaign provides a valuable snapshot of the roads that the public perceives as pain points,” said Teresa Di Felice, assistant vice-president for CAA South Central Ontario. “For 20 years, this campaign has served as a powerful advocacy tool, initiating dialogues with decisionmakers and driving positive change for safer roads across Ontario.”

For the second year in a row, Barton Street East in Hamilton claims the top spot.

“Barton Street’s persistent issues with potholes and severe alligator cracking in the pavement have led to its dubious distinction,” the CAA reported in a press release. The road first appeared on the organization’s list in 2019 and since then has “steadily climbed its way to the top.”

The top five worst roads in Toronto alone were Eglinton Avenue West, Finch Avenue West, Steeles Avenue East, Lakeshore Boulevard East and Sheppard Avenue East.

It’s been several years since a Toronto street was deemed the worst road in the province. Eglinton Avenue East was the most recent Toronto road to be given that distinction, in 2019.

This year the list was verified by the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario, an alliance that, since 2005, has advocated for investment into Ontario’s infrastructure.
