A note from the publisher

JORDAN BITOVE PUBLISHER, THE TORONTO STAR

There is a moment that every parent will appreciate. It’s that time when, after many encouraging prompts to “share nicely,” your child voluntarily gives something to someone else. The time when it is done unbegrudgingly, spontaneously, and on their own initiative.

You can picture it. Maybe not the specific exchange, but you know that moment and how it felt. How rewarding it was to see your child experience the benefit of giving. To see them realize that another person would feel better because of their gesture.

It is when, for as much as they treasure what they have, they understand it can feel good to give someone else the same experience. It is that time when, maybe because someone was generous with them, they know that their actions can make a difference.

I think about that now as I try to capture in words what it means to give, and what Giving Tuesday means to us all, as a community.

Like kids learning their way, it’s sometimes hard to be charitable. Maybe we feel short on time in our busy lives, or that we don’t have enough ourselves to be giving.

Yet, through experience, we understand how much it means to have someone else give their time, or lend a hand, to us. It is something that comes full circle.

Giving is a profound appreciation of what it is to receive someone else’s attention, someone else’s support.

Giving is a foundation for how we all grow and care for one and other. As parents, as friends, and as a society.

Today is Giving Tuesday and we are pleased to share this space with you to celebrate how people in Toronto are giving to others and inspiring us with ways to lend our support.

Whether it’s time, talent, donations or our voice – we all have the ability to “share nicely.”
