Is hijab a symbol of oppression?

‘Iranian women are furious,’ Sept. 25

Religious freedom has become an oxymoron; in Iran, a young woman is dead because her head scarf did not meet the dictates of her religion as decided by the men who made the rules.

CBC anchor Ginella Massa’s beautifully placed hijab has suddenly made me uncomfortable. It’s as if I am somehow supporting those who would kill over headgear by my acceptance.

As is the case with the Roe v. Wade reversal in the U.S., religion is increasingly infringing on women’s rights. We have the Taliban as an extreme example, but is it really so outlandish to think it’s the ultimate aim of these evangelical movements?

When you are not part of this belief system, it’s very hard to decide where the line should be drawn to keep your daughters safely out of the hands of these extremists, but the time has come to think about it. Rochelle Hatton, Sudbury, Ont.
