City to subsidize home security for councillors

The City of Waterloo will pay up to $9,600 per year to subsidize home security systems for councillors who worry about their safety amid increased anger directed at public officials. “It makes me sad that we’re here and we’re having this conversation,” Coun. Diane Freeman said Monday as city council voted 7-0 to endorse the new expense. Council endorsed the new allowance after a city report raised concerns about “direct and indirect threats made to elected officials both within the City of Waterloo and on a broader provincial and national level.” “Something has changed in the tenor of discourse,” Coun. Tenille Bonoguore said.
