Research backs up proportional representation

Is it finally time for electoral reform in Ontario?, June 25

Research by Dennis Pilon, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at York University, shows that countries using the first-pastthe-post (FPTP) electoral system average slightly more elections than those using proportional representation (PR).

With only a 43 per cent of the eligible voters turning out, and, therefore, only 18 per cent of the population actually voting for the PCs, which resulted in 67 per cent of the seats and 100 per cent of the power, I don’t know how anyone can say that FPTP is a fair, democratic system.
