BRAMPTON EAST

Josh Rubin

Incumbent Liberal MP Maninder Sidhu has been reelected in the riding of Brampton East.

Sidhu edged out NDP candidate Gail Bannister-Clarke and Naval Bajaj of the Conservative party. Manjeet Singh ran for the People’s Party of Canada.

Bannister-Clarke, a long-time educator, is the president of the Peel Elementary Teachers’ union local, and is on the board of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.

Provincially, the riding is held by Gurratan Singh, the younger brother of federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. (The federal leader also previously held this riding provincially).

In 2019, Sidhu romped past the NDP’s Saranjit Singh, earning 47.4 per cent of the votes to Singh’s 26.3 per cent. The Conservative party’s Ramona Singh had 23.9 per cent.

Before entering politics, Sidhu ran a successful customs brokerage business. As MP, Sidhu has served on the standing committee on natural resources, as well as the standing committee on transport, infrastructure and communities.
