MILTON

Alex McKeen

Adam van Koeverden has defeated a Conservative challenger to hold onto the riding of Milton for the Liberals.

The former Olympic sprint kayaker won the riding in 2019 over Conservative powerhouse Lisa Raitt, a former cabinet minister and deputy leader for the party, who also ran for her party’s leadership. Milton was first represented in the 2015 election and was previously encompassed by the defunct Halton riding, which Raitt had represented since 2008.

Van Koeverden grew up in Oakville and practised kayak at the Burloak Canoe club. He went on to win four Olympic medals in sprint kayak.

He was appointed as parliamentary secretary to the minister of finance for sport, where he introduced funding for sports programs across the country.

Raitt left politics after the 2019 election. Akbar is an IT consultant and longtime volunteer with the Conservative party.

Van Koeverden upset Raitt by winning over 50 per cent of the vote in 2019.
