MISSISSAUGA CENTRE

Alex McKeen

Omar Alghabra has held onto Mississauga Centre for the Liberals.

The federal minister of transport has represented the GTA seat since 2015. Prior to that, he was the MP representing Mississauga—Erindale from 2006 to 2008.

Mississauga Centre was assembled for the 2015 election from parts of three other Mississauga ridings. It also existed from 1997 to 2004, and has always been represented by a Liberal.

Alghabra was challenged in 2021 by Kathy-ying Zhao, an employment consultant specializing in helping immigrants settle in Canada.

Alghabra was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Toronto to study. He has a degree in engineering from Ryerson University, and an MBA from York University.

He has worked as a visiting professor at Ryerson University, and as an executive in the sustainable energy sector.

According to the 2016 federal census, Mississauga Centre has more than 124,000 residents, making it the largest riding by population in the city.
