OAKVILLE

Alex McKeen

One of the Liberal government’s most prominent ministers throughout the pandemic has been re-elected.

Anita Anand, who serves as minister of procurement, won the riding of Oakville on Monday night.

As minister, Anand was responsible for obtaining COVID-19 vaccines for Canada.

The NDP candidate in the riding was Jerome Adamo, an early childhood educator who also ran in 2019 for the party.

J.D. Meaney, a hospital industry consultant, ran for the People’s Party of Canada.

Oakville swings between Liberal and Conservative representation. Liberal John Oliver defeated Tory MP Terrence Young there in 2015, but did not seek reelection in 2019. Anand defeated Young that year.

In 2021, Anand ran against Conservative candidate Kerry Colborne, who owns a mortgage brokerage firm, and volunteers with heritage and youth initiatives in Oakville.

Anand was a law professor at the University of Toronto before entering politics.
