PICKERINGUXBRIDGE

Kieran Leavitt

The race to become the next member of Parliament for the riding of Pickering-Uxbridge was undecided as of deadline Monday night.

The Conservative candidate was Jacob Mantle, an international trade lawyer and a lifelong resident of the riding. In 2010, Mantle was elected as a councillor in the Township of Uxbridge, becoming the youngest ever councillor to be elected there.

The Liberal candidate was incumbent Jennifer O’Connell. She has served on the House of Commons standing committee on finance and as parliamentary secretary to the finance minister during her time in Parliament. The NDP candidate was Eileen Higdon, a trained nurse and midwife.

O’Connell has represented the riding since 2015 when the Liberal party won it for the first time.

The riding, which has an average income of $52,000, is split between the City of Pickering to the south and Uxbridge Township in the more rural north.
