NEWMARKETAURORA

Alex McKeen

Tony Van Bynen has won Newmarket—Aurora for the Liberals.

The race was a priority for both the Conservative and Liberal camps. Newmarket—Aurora is a swing riding that Van Bynen won by just over 3,000 votes in 2019.

The riding was once represented by Belinda Stronach, who was elected as a Conservative in 2004 but later crossed the floor to sit as a Liberal in the House of Commons.

Van Bynen is a former mayor of Newmarket who first entered municipal politics in 2000 as a town councillor. He beat Conservative MP Lois Brown to win Newmarket-Aurora in 2019.

Harold Kim, who ran for the Conservatives, was Van Bynen’s main challenger in 2021. He is currently on leave as the deputy mayor of Aurora.

Van Bynen helped found Belinda’s Place, a support service for homeless women, in Newmarket.
