HUMBER RIVER— BLACK CREEK

Victoria Gibson

Judy Sgro has won the riding of Humber River—Black Creek for the Liberals. Sgro held the seat for the Grits, which she’s represented since 1999. The riding is a longtime Liberal stronghold, voting red in each federal election since 1962.

Sgro got involved in politics when she was elected in North York as a metro councillor in 1987. She was minister for citizenship and immigration in the early 2000s.

In the last federal election in 2019, Sgro became tangled in Justin Trudeau’s “blackface” scandal when she remarked that “those in the Black community have told me how much more love they have for the prime minister” after the incidents came to light. In securing another term in office, Sgro beat the NDP’s Matias de Dovitiis, who came with experience in the non-profit and political spheres; Conservative Rinku Shah, who works with Indian food businesses; Green Unblind Tibbin, who works with social justice groups; and the People’s Party’s Raatib Anderson, who works in e-commerce.
