Manifesting the potential for magic in our lives

While few people believe in potions, magic is spiritual belief for many

One of the hardest things children learn as they grow up is that magic isn’t real. No matter how genuinely they believe or how hard they wish, waving a wand will not turn rocks into gold. At some point, they realize that the presents under the tree were placed there by their parents and not some magical being.

But what if the adults were wrong? What if magic is real?

While few people believe in the existence of potions that can force people to tell the truth or mirrors that can show us what is happening in other parts of the world, a lot people do believe in magic. For many, magic is a spiritual belief.

Although tarot is not explicitly founded upon this belief, the Magician card beautifully captures what this belief entails. In most decks, the Magician is portrayed as a person standing before a table displaying symbolic objects that represent the various aspects of human capabilities. Its meaning is that every person possesses the tools we need to succeed in our lives.

Simply put, magic is the idea that we are all capable of manifesting the lives we desire. It begins with a belief in our own potential and continues with the will, courage and effort to turn our goals into reality. Therefore, when the Magician shows up in a reading, it is a calling to pursue our ambitions and trust that we have the skills and resources to achieve the results we desire. To become a Magician is to take control of our own fate.

The following is a reading to ask how we can manifest the potential of the Magician in our own lives.

Card: Queen of Pentacles

This Queen is the embodiment of comfort and luxury. She knows how to treat herself well and enjoys being in her own body. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean she has a lot of money or a face and body that resembles people we see on magazines.

Rather, what the Queen of Pentacles represents is a plentiful attitude and mindset. Instead of being a lucky woman bestowed with riches and charm, she is a person who makes the most out of what she’s been given. She knows that even if she can’t afford to dine at fancy restaurants, she can make delicious meals with the spices in her cabinet and set the mood with candles and music.

This card is here to teach us that happiness and fulfilment begins with a “can-do” attitude. To achieve our goals and desires, we need to focus on what we can do instead of what we can’t. We may be thousands of steps away from our goal, but we can remain positive knowing that every step we take matters.

Card: 6 of Pentacles

In this reading, I see this card as an extension of the lesson found in the Queen of Pentacles. While the Queen is about our attitudes, this card is about our actions.

Generally, the 6 of Pentacles is about giving. Oftentimes, it’s associated with the concept of charity and generosity. However, it is important to understand (especially in the context of this reading) that one doesn’t have to be wealthy in order to be giving. The beauty of generosity isn’t in giving away our excesses, but giving what we can and doing so sincerely.

So, what does this have to do with magic and manifestation? Everything!

Contrary to popular culture, magic isn’t instantaneous and effortless. Rather, it’s an exchange with the universe. For the universe to grant our desires, we must first make a sincere offer. If we want to be successful in our careers, we must give our best effort. If we want to be loved, we must show others love.

Every time we want something, we must ask, “what have we given in exchange for this?”

Card: Tower

The Tower represents sudden downturns that can feel like insurmountable obstacles. When this card shows up, we need to brace ourselves for difficult times. As frightening as this may seem, it is the perfect card to conclude this reading.

The one thing that fantasy gets right in terms of magic is that every hero’s journey begins with an acceptance to a challenge.

With this acceptance, the hero risks failure and disappointment in exchange for a chance to achieve glory, love, and fulfilment. There’s no guarantee that effort alone will produce results, and every one of us must decide for ourselves whether the risk is worth the reward.

The truth many of us don’t like to acknowledge is that, oftentimes, our dissatisfaction is, at least partially, the result of our own complacency and lack of will. Many of us are unhappy because we’re afraid of changes. If we allow our fears to get the better of us, we’ll never achieve our dreams. There’ll always be something scary in our paths and the only way to get to our destination is to face these scary things.

Have you accepted your challenge?
