A sugar tax on sodas? What about these unhealthy foods?

Re

Should provinces adopt a sugar tax? The Saturday Debate, July 24

I read with interest your contributor who suggested a sugar tax on sweetened beverages.

It looks like the focus is on sugary soda.

Why pick on that?

There are many more foods around that are bad for people’s health, for example:

Deep-fried chicken, deep-fried fish, french fries, onion rings, poutine, doughnuts — what would Tom Hortons serve? — candy and chocolate. Maple syrup is mostly sugar.

I think I’ve made my point that it wouldn’t cure anything and it’s a minuscule manoeuvre in a world that likes all bad food.

Anyway, Canada’s “national” maple syrup, poutine and Tim Hortons could never be taken away.
